    Add Random Quiz Questions from Question Bank

    Follow the instructions below to set up a quiz with random questions from a bank

    Random quiz questions from the question bank in Moodle offer assessment integrity, question variety, formative assessment support, and time-saving benefits.

    Step 1

    Inside the quiz page, go to Settings (Admin Gear), then Questions.

    Step 2

    If the quiz already has questions, follow the process below to delete them.

    Delete Quiz Items

    Step 1

    Click on “Select Multiple Items


    Step 2

    Select all the questions you would like to delete. If all of them should be removed, click on “Select all” 


    Step 3

    Click on "Delete Selected"


    Step 4

    Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes on the pop-up box.

    Add Quiz Items

    Step 1

    Click on “Add

    Step 2

    Click on “+ a random question

    Step 3

    Select the question bank required for the quiz. 

    Step 4

    Select the number of questions you want to randomly select and click on Add random question


    Step 5

    Verify that all of the questions are actually random. If so, they’ll be labeled with a dice icon and the word “Random

    How to export questions to a file

    This procedure only works for multiple-choice questions. All other types of questions must be copied manually from Moodle.  

    Step 1

    Locate the quiz from which you want to export the questions and access the question bank.

    Step 2

    Select Export in the dropdown menu, click on Aiken format (txt: recommended format for downloading), select the category you want to export, and click on Export questions to file. 

    Delete

    How to move questions to another category 

    We highly recommend using specific banks for every quiz if you want the questions exported. If the questions that need to be exported are added in multiple categories, these can be moved to a category of our choice. 

    Step 1

    Select Questions in the dropdown menu and select the category that contains the questions you want to move.

    Step 2

    Select the questions you want to move, click on With Selected, and then click on Move to. 


    Step 3

    Select the category of your choice and click on Move to.


    Delete

    How to create and edit a category  

    If the categories already created contain questions, we can create a new category and move questions to it.  

    Step 1

    Select Categories in the dropdown menu and click on Add category.

    Step 2

    Select a Parent category, which is the place where the new category will be placed.  We recommend using “Top” categories because these are not contained in any other category.  

    Add the category name and click on Add Category.

    Click on the gear icon below the category name to access the settings. Once there, follow the steps described above.

    If there is a category with no questions added, we can edit it and change the name and the parent category if needed.
